Yoga for Strong Bones - Class Series

Science has demonstrated that yoga can be used effectively to increase bone mass! You will learn the 12 pose yoga sequence that has been shown in research to build healthy bones, and how to use light weights and innovative ways to play with balance (practices also shown to improve bone mass).

This series will provide students with an accessible way to take what they learn in the studio to their home practices for long-term improvement in balance, and bone and muscle strength.


Dates: Tuesdays 10/3, 10/10, 10/17, 10/24, 10/31, 11/7
Time: 4:30 - 5:45 pm

YOGA FOR STRONG BONES WORKSHOP

Science has demonstrated that yoga can be used effectively to increase bone mass (for more on that go here!). Judi will teach you the yoga sequence that has been shown to build healthy bones AND will teach you how to use light weights (provided by the studio) and innovative ways to play with balance to amp it all up! It will be fun!

Everyone will leave with a printout of the sequence, including pictures of the poses, for home practice.

Join me for 3 days at beautiful Menla Resort and Spa for an exploration of how each of us can use our yoga practice to reduce stress and build resilience. This is an invitation to practice asana (postures) and meditation in depth, in a very special peaceful place, AND take home ideas for making these ancient practices a part of improving the quality of your day-to-day life.

Menla is the home of the breathtaking Dewa Spa where if you choose, you can luxuriate in a large variety of relaxing and beautiful treatments.

The cost of the 3 day retreat ranges from $756-$960, depending on accommodations chosen (private room with queen bed and private bath or double room with 2 full beds and private bath). Prices are all-inclusive: accommodations, all meals (vegetarian, cooked with love, with many ingredients grown in the beautiful gardens on the property), yoga classes (all props provided, including a rope wall!), use of outdoor pool, tennis courts, and access to 325 acres of beautiful property (a private nature preserve), including well-labeled hiking trails. Treatments at the Dewa Spa are NOT included in the price.

Restorative Yoga and Meditation

Relax and open your heart in restorative poses where your body will be completely supported by bolsters, blankets, bocks and straps; a grounded, calm, stable and supple state of being is available to you! Once your body is open and your mind is quiet, we will practice a few forms of meditation, both lying down and seated. 

This is a perfect experience for those familiar with meditation and for those who are brand new to this ancient and beautiful practice.

By transforming your relationship to gravity, the ropes assist in focusing on specific parts of the body and refining the dynamics within a yoga pose. We'll be taking the body forward, backwards, sideways and upside down - come play!

Following the work with the body and the breath, Judi will guide you through several lying down and seated meditation practices.
Come for a deeply relaxing afternoon that will be a journey into the space inside each of us - where the mind meets the body and greets the breath. You will leave with a renewed sense of ease, contentment and well-being.

Judi Friedman, Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher and IAYT Certified Yoga Therapist and Marti Wolfson, Chef and Functional Nutritionist Our yoga practice will be a "recipe" for balance in navigating the seasonal transition from Summer to Fall. The cooking class will be a hands-on culinary experience that will inspire your inner cook to use the Fall bounty in colorful and flavorful dishes. The menu is plant-based and ingredients are sourced from the Chappaqua Farmers Market. The Retreat will culminate in a group dinner. All levels of yoga practitioners are welcome!

1:00-3:30pm Yoga practice at Breathe Pilates and Yoga, Chappaqua (please arrive 15 minutes early)

3:30-4:00pm Break (walk or drive from Breathe to Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Chappaqua)

4:00-6:30pm Cooking class and dinner (gluten free and dairy optional) at St. Mary's

Inversion Excursion - Introduction to the 4 upside-down "Stands"

Join Judi to systematically and SAFELY explore four inversions that will literally turn you and yourSELF upside down! In this workshop we will move step-by-step through the strength, stability, flexibility and balance required for: Headstand, Handstand, Forearm Stand and Shoulderstand. After fully preparing the body, several variations of each "Stand" will be taught so that everyone can achieve success in experiencing the inversions.**  Come to experience the profound effect that these poses have on our ability to perceive ourselves, and the world, from another perspective!

Pre-requisite: One year of yoga practice

**Students with neck or shoulder conditions WILL be safely accommodated with props and variations!

5th Annual Iyengar Yoga Retreat with Judi Friedman

Summer at Heathen Hill Yoga provides the perfect setting to dedicate time to deepen your yoga practice. We will gather together for practice sessions that allow the time to explore the subtle aspects of practicing with "effortless effort." The morning classes will focus on finding that balance through active sequences that thoroughly delve into standing poses, forward and backward bendings and twists. Our late afternoon classes will expand on the theme from the perspective of restorative postures, inversions and pranayama (breath work). 

During your free time you can take a dip in the swimming hole, hike the labyrinth and/or trails, hot tub, read or nap in a hammock, play games, or meditate. All of our meals are nurturing, delicious and made-with-love with most ingredients picked from the huge organic garden at Heathen Hill.

This workshop is for seasoned practitioners who are dedicated to penetrating the surface of the rich practice of asana and pranayama. Please bring an open mind, a full heart and a learner’s inquisitiveness.
